Taking Care Of Our Own
With everything going on in the world it is quite easy to get distracted by all of the issues being presented by the media. Currently, anything that Donald Trump seems to do garners worldwide criticism and concern. We seem to get sidetracked with global issues while we continue to ignore our own vulnerable people (homeless, indigenous people, mental health and addictions and that is just a start). We do not have to look all that far to see ignorance and a little bit of Donald Trump in us all. For years we have turned our head to the homeless issues facing our country. Having 7,000 homeless children and youth every night should scream human rights but for some reason it does not. Canadians just don't seem to care about these vulnerable Canadians. If we did we would be screaming as loud in protest, as we are right now for women's issues and on behalf of immigrants and refugees.
It is not that I think we should ban immigrants because I clearly don't feel that way. Our country was built on immigration and I truly believe that we are a stronger and more compassionate nation because of immigration. I find that people of other cultures and nations are typically very compassionate and willing to support this country. They have seen suffering and horrors and know what it is to survive. It is our own people that have become blind to many issues right here at home. Issues such as homelessness, mental health and addictions and the struggles of our indigenous people. We are ignorant to the facts and since the media doesn't find it a hot topic, everyday Canadians think of these issues as someone else's problem. Some even think that the homeless individual's brought the problem on themselves. Ignorance over compassion unless the media things it's important. That is becoming the Canadian way. It is time for a change.
